How is the procedure done?

The tube is put in through one of the incisions. The surgeon performs the surgery while looking at a monitor, and the gallbladder is removed through one of the incisions.

Is there any risk linked with using a telescope inside the body?

A telescope is only used to see the organ inside the body. It is not involved in the operation.

Is there an increased risk of infection?

No. As this is a laproscopic surgery, only minor cuts are made, which means your body is less exposed to infection. Less wound infection after the operation is one of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery.

Is this operation safe for kids or fat patients?

The operation is ideally suited for fat patients as the thickness of the tummy wall is immaterial when inserting the telescope and instruments inside the stomach. This is usually opposite to the open surgery where the fatter patient has a larger and deeper cut leading to more bleeding, pain, and stitches. Kids can also tolerate laparoscopic intervention very well. The instrument used to do laproscopy in kids is less in thickness than in adult patients.

Does laproscopic cholecystectomy only involve the removal of gall bladder stones?

No. In laproscopic cholecystectomy, the gall bladder is removed along with stone, similar to open surgery.
