Occasional heartburn happens to most people. But when acidity becomes frequent, it may be GERD - a condition that benefits from proper management. This guide explains the basics.

What Is GERD?

GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the oesophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach. This happens when the muscle that normally prevents this backflow weakens or relaxes at the wrong times.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Heartburn
A burning sensation in the chest, often after eating.
๐Ÿคฎ Regurgitation
A sour or bitter taste from stomach acid backing up.
๐Ÿ˜– Chest Discomfort
Discomfort that can sometimes be mistaken for heart-related pain.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Difficulty Swallowing
A sensation of food getting stuck.

Common Triggers

GERD symptoms are often triggered or worsened by spicy or fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, being overweight, eating large meals, or lying down soon after eating.

Note: occasional heartburn after a heavy meal is common and not necessarily GERD. It is the frequency and persistence of symptoms - typically more than twice a week - that suggests GERD may be present.

How GERD Is Typically Managed

Treatment usually starts with lifestyle changes - avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, not lying down right after eating, and weight management where relevant. Medications such as antacids or acid-reducing drugs are often added if lifestyle changes alone are not enough. In persistent cases not responding to these measures, further evaluation - sometimes including endoscopy - may be recommended.

When to See a Gastroenterologist

  • Heartburn occurring more than twice a week
  • Symptoms not improving with over-the-counter antacids
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Unexplained weight loss alongside acidity symptoms
  • Chest pain that concerns you (always seek urgent evaluation for new chest pain)

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GERD different from occasional heartburn?+
Occasional heartburn after a heavy meal is common. GERD is characterized by frequent symptoms, typically more than twice a week, and often needs proper management rather than resolving on its own.
Can GERD be managed without medication?+
Many cases respond well to lifestyle changes alone - avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down right after eating. Medication may be added if needed.
Is chest pain from GERD dangerous?+
GERD can cause chest discomfort that feels similar to heart-related pain. Any new or concerning chest pain should be evaluated urgently to rule out cardiac causes.
When would I need an endoscopy for GERD?+
Endoscopy is generally considered for persistent symptoms not responding to initial treatment, or if there are additional concerning symptoms like difficulty swallowing or weight loss.
