Breast surgery (cosmetic and non-malignancy) is a procedure that modifies a woman’s breasts. These kinds of surgeries are done for a variety of reasons. Some are done for cosmetic reasons, like reconstructing the breast to look more youthful or increasing its size. Others are medically necessary, such as breast reduction for back pain or other conditions related to the breast, like breast fibroadenoma.
Types of breast cosmetic and non-malignant surgeries
- Breast Augmentation: It is done to enhance the appearance, contour, and size of a woman's breasts. This is considered for multiple reasons like to increase the breast size, to correct the breast asymmetry, etc. Breast augmentation is performed with the help of implants which can be placed under a chest muscle or over a chest muscle.
- Breast Reduction: This surgical procedure is often considered in women with heavy and large breasts who experience discomforts like pain in the neck or back and numbness or weakness due to the weight of the breasts. Excessive fat, tissues of the breast, and skin are removed in this procedure. After the surgery, most women report relief from the symptoms caused due to oversized breasts.
- Breast Reconstruction: This is a surgical procedure of rebuilding the shape and look of a breast. It is performed in women who undergo breast removal surgery to treat breast cancer. Lumpectomy: This is a surgical procedure done when a noncancerous tumour like a fibroadenoma of the breast is removed. This is also known as an excisional breast biopsy.
